At the turn of the 20th century, America took possession of the Philippines and ruled it as a colony until World War Two. As early as 1902, America sent 500 language teachers to the Philippines to establish the English language there. More than 30 years ago, the Philippines instituted English as an official language to be taught in all schools, the only country in the region to do so. Today the Philippines is the third largest English-speaking country in the world, second only to the US and UK. English is the official language for science, math, and technology.
